Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken DreamWorks brings a new type of monster to the universe. The unique spin on popular mythology portrays the Kraken as anything but a hungry ship-eater, as the titular Ruby Gilman and her family try their best to live a normal life on land. The film happily subverts expectations and, in true DreamWorks fashion, boasts enough heart and humor to be enjoyable for the whole family.
The film aims to blend obvious mythological concepts with the reality of being a teenager, and it does so smoothly with the help of music by Grammy-winning composer Stephanie Economo. Known for work on various projects including Economou Succession of Jupiter And ManhuntBut thanks to a long history of collaborations with the composer Harry Gregson-Williams has also worked on beloved films such as Mars and live-action mulan. For Ruby Gillman, Teenage Kraken, Stephanie Economo has created a headpiece that feels appropriately dramatic but also completely contemporary. Economore’s use of modern instrumentation and a loofy musical aesthetic make “Ruby Gilman, Teenage Kraken” stand out from the rest of the film’s main title tracks, though it underscores the film as a whole. Regarding the thought process behind the theme, Ekonomo said the following:
Ruby Gillman is smart, quirky, curious, bold and unique, so I really wanted to see how colorful and special she embodies the sonic properties of her theme. Early on, I had an idea to explore dream pop/shoegaze as a stylistic influence in the score. I thought the smoky atmosphere and Lofi effects really captured the essence of water and also felt tonally within Ruby’s teenage experiences. The title track features his theme omnichord and rubber bridge/electric guitar (John Monroe), vocals (Arie Mason), electroacoustic harp through pedal effects (Emily Hopkins) and vintage synth.
